Plug in Ethernet, install Ubuntu Server, set up Docker, and deploy your first apps within an hour. Add an external HDD for backups later.
Don’t overthink hardware for your first server. The best hardware is the hardware you actually start using.

Build 1: The $100 Starter

What to Install First
Regardless of which build you choose, install these in order:
Day 1: Foundation
- Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS — Download, flash to USB with Rufus or Balena Etcher, install.
- Docker + Docker Compose — Installation guide
- Portainer or Dockge — Visual Docker management
Day 2: Essential Services
- Pi-hole — Block ads for your whole network
- Vaultwarden — Replace LastPass/1Password
- Uptime Kuma — Monitor your services
Week 1: Productivity
- Nextcloud — Replace Google Drive/Dropbox
- Immich — Replace Google Photos (if you have photos to back up)
- FreshRSS — Replace Feedly/news apps
Week 2: Media and More

Hardware Shopping Checklist
Before buying, verify:
- CPU supports VT-x (virtualization) — needed for Docker, essential for Proxmox
- RAM is expandable — at least 2 DIMM/SO-DIMM slots
- Ethernet port — Wi-Fi is not acceptable for a server
- Storage is upgradeable — M.2 slot for NVMe, SATA ports for drives
- Includes power adapter — used equipment sometimes ships without one
- Comes with OS or you have a Linux USB — you’ll install Ubuntu Server
Common Beginner Mistakes
Buying Too Much Hardware
You don’t need a rack server, 10GbE networking, or 128 GB RAM to start. A $160 mini PC runs everything a beginner needs. Start small, expand when you hit limits.
Buying Too Little RAM
8 GB is tight for more than 10 containers. 16 GB is the minimum for a comfortable experience. If buying used, check if RAM is upgradeable and budget for a stick or two.
Using Wi-Fi Instead of Ethernet
Wi-Fi adds latency, drops connections, and reduces throughput. Run an Ethernet cable to your server. If the server is far from your router, use a Powerline adapter or MoCA adapter over coax — still better than Wi-Fi for a server.
Skipping Backups
Your server WILL fail eventually. Set up automated backups from day 1:
- Restic or BorgBackup to an external USB drive
- Weekly at minimum, daily is better
- Test your restore process before you need it
Running on an SD Card
SD cards are not designed for server workloads. They wear out quickly under the constant writes from Docker, databases, and logs. Use an SSD (NVMe or SATA). Even a cheap 128 GB SSD outlasts any SD card.
Not Securing SSH
Change the default SSH port, disable password login (use keys instead), and install fail2ban. Your server is on your home network — it’s not exposed to the internet unless you choose to expose it — but good security habits start on day 1. See our Security Basics guide.

Don’t plan for year 2 when buying for month 1. Your needs will change as you learn what you actually use.
FAQ
Can I use my old laptop as a server?
Yes, temporarily. Laptops have batteries (built-in UPS), screens for setup, and Wi-Fi as backup. Downsides: limited RAM expansion, no SATA ports, not designed for 24/7 operation, battery degrades. Fine for learning, replace with a mini PC when you’re committed.
Do I need a domain name?
Not to start. Access your server by IP address on your local network (e.g., http://192.168.1.100:8080). Add a domain later when you want remote access via reverse proxy.
Should I run Windows or Linux?
Linux. Specifically Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS. Docker runs natively on Linux with zero overhead. Docker on Windows runs in a Linux VM, which adds complexity and uses more resources. If you’ve never used Linux, now is a great time to learn — see Linux Basics for Self-Hosting.
How much internet speed do I need?
For local use only: doesn’t matter (everything stays on your LAN). For remote access: your upload speed determines how fast you can access services remotely. 10 Mbps upload handles file sync and web apps. 50+ Mbps upload handles remote media streaming.
Is it safe to leave a server running 24/7?
Yes. Modern hardware is designed for continuous operation. An efficient mini PC drawing 6W produces less heat than a light bulb. Use a surge protector or UPS, ensure adequate ventilation, and it’ll run for years.
