Summary

Containers Alongside VMs
Proxmox runs LXC containers natively alongside KVM virtual machines. An LXC container uses a fraction of the resources of a full VM — no separate kernel, no BIOS emulation, near-native performance. Run Pi-hole in an LXC container using 64MB of RAM instead of a full VM using 1GB.
Since v9.1, Proxmox can also pull OCI images directly from container registries, bridging the gap between LXC and Docker workflows.
ESXi has no container support. Every workload needs a full VM.
Storage Flexibility
Proxmox supports ZFS natively — create mirrored pools, raidz arrays, and snapshots directly from the web UI. For multi-node clusters, built-in Ceph integration provides distributed storage without additional licensing.
